Last year when I enrolled Yohan for kindergarten, the law states a child has to be 5 before October 1. She turned 5 September 15. So it was ok. This year to attend first grade, the law states a child must be 6 years old before September 1st. How can that be? My child turns 6, two weeks after. In a public school where she goes now, she will be in first grade for school year 2014-2015. My husband and I were trying to transfer her to a private school. But the private school said, she didn't reach the cut off age for first graders this year. This is my dilemna, my daughter can proceed to first grade in public school, because she reached the cut off the previous year for kindergarten. But could not go to first grade in a private school I want, because the law changed this year. I'm so upset. Now, the principal just needs my child's latest report card. I understand her explanation though, if she admitted my child, she would be the youngest in her class for the next 12 years. She wanted my child to be ready, emotionally, and mentally. She compared my child's assessment to the other kid they assessed. He was born Sep 14, 2007. But will go to first grade with Yohan. She said that's a full year difference. I might not think it's not much difference. She's a principal, she said there's a huge difference. So I did a little research, since I grew up in the Philippines and not familiar with the law here in California. I found out they made some changes in 2010. For years, it's always been "a child has to be 6 years old before December" to be in first grade, or 5 before December to be in kindergarten. I just feel bad for my situation, because the change happened now.. I want my child to be in first grade in that school. But I don't want to set her up for failure because that private school thought she's too young. Maybe I will think of it as blessing in disguised? She can continue going to first grade in public school. I will just think, she has a lot of friends there already. And she's very comfortable. But I won't lie, when I hand my child's report card to the private school. I hope they'll accept her. Not because of anything else, but because they think she is ready, emotionally and mentally.
I was at a party last night and met a child who is 6 years old and will be 7 this august. I asked what grade she's in. She will we on second grade this school year. Hay.. That means she turned 6 just one month before September last year and was in first grade. Very close to my child's age now..
